alignright size-full wp-image-763As you prepare your child for the first dental visit in our office, you can rest assured that our team will work to make that visit is as pleasant and as educational as possible. However, it is normal for you and your family to have questions about what will happen when you arrive for the appointment, so we’ve provided the following information in order to provide you with a sneak preview:

Your child’s first visit includes an oral examination, in which the dentist will look closely at the teeth, gums, tongue, jaw, and roof of the mouth. This examination helps us to check for cavities, gum problems, and developmental abnormalities.

The first visit may also include digital X-rays, which are quick and easy electronic images of the head, jaw, and mouth. The dentist uses these pictures to check for hidden cavities, but x-rays also show us the shape of the jaw, the position of unerupted adult teeth, and the progress of any loose baby teeth.

In most cases, your child’s first visit will also include a gentle teeth cleaning. For children, the teeth cleaning procedure includes plaque and tartar removal from the surfaces of the teeth and along the gum line. Flossing and polishing are important to the teeth cleaning process, and the importance of plaque control is regularly discussed in simple terms that are easy for our young patients to understand.

Since we are a dental team that is committed to preventing dental diseases in children, we may also recommend preventive treatments such as fluoride applications and sealants after the oral examination and cleaning.

Your family’s first visit in our office isn’t about us…it’s about you! So we want you to come prepared with any questions or concerns that you may have regarding your oral health. We are here to provide you with a fun and safe place to learn all about keeping your smile healthy and beautiful for the rest of your life.
